Best Storm Shells of 2015
To conduct our 2015 storm shell test, test director Ryan Stuart used these jackets while hiking, mountain biking, and scrambling in the Canadian wilds around Vancouver Island and mainland British Columbia. He compared them side by side rating them on our six main criteria—weathershedding, breathability, function, durability, packability, and value. The Gear Institute Rating is the combined score across all categories, representing the highest overall level of performance.
The Millet Grepon is a four season worthy shell optimized for mountaineering and backcountry skiing.
The Mountain Hardware Quasar Lite provides excellent value for a shell that can hack everything from backpacking to alpine pursuits in all four seasons.
The Outdoor Research Axiom is suitable for a range of activities—from ski touring to backpacking.
The Patagonia Storm Racer Jacket is a trail running jacket built to comply with ultra race gear requirements, but versatile enough for other activities.
The Rab Muztag is a simple mountain inspired shell with breathability worthy of aerobic pursuits.
The TNF FuseForm Dot Matrix Jacket offers decent performance in wet weather, with good breathability, but it comes up short on other details.
